Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro: The Best Neighborhoods and Our Top Picks

Written by Gio · Reviewed by Gui

Rio is a city where your neighborhood choice can shape your whole trip. Want beach mornings and easy walks to restaurants, or a more local vibe with quick rides to the main sights? If you're wondering what neighborhood in Rio will match your trip's vibe, we got you. Below, we break down the best areas to stay, who each one is best for, and a shortlist of hotels and hostels to consider (and yes, we added Flamengo, which is underrated and super practical). Do you prefer booking an Airbnb? We have some tips for you too.

TL;DR

If it’s your first time in Rio and you want the smoothest experience, choose a highly reviewed accommodation in Ipanema or Copacabana, and stay in a hotel with 24h reception. For value and a more local vibe, Botafogo and Flamengo are usually the smartest apartment neighborhoods. If you want calm and luxury, stay in Santa Teresa or Leblon.

  • Booking Tips We Actually Use in Rio
  • Ipanema: best all-around base for your trip
  • Copacabana: classic, busy, convenient
  • Leblon: calm, but still very Rio
  • Santa Teresa: charm, luxury, and a slower pace
  • Flamengo: central, leafy, and super practical
  • Airbnb in Rio: when it’s worth it and where it works best

Booking Tips We Actually Use in Rio

Prioritize exact location over “stars”: if you're on a budget, a simpler place on a better street often wins.

Check noise notes: beach avenues can be loud. Look for “quiet room” requests, internal-facing rooms or higher building floors.

Choose places with 24h reception and avoid complicated check-ins for safety. You can check in the linked article more local safety tips for enjoying Rio.

Ipanema: best all-around base for your trip (beach, commuting, food and clubs)

This neighborhood is easy like enjoying the Girl from Ipanema song on a sunny day. You can wake up, walk to the beach, grab a good coffee, and do most things without a long commute. Ipanema is a lively area where you'll find a lot of great dining and clubbing spots, and it’s also one of the safest-feeling areas for tourists in the South Zone, especially during the day and early evening.

Our Top Picks in Ipanema

  • Arena Ipanema Hotel (mid-range hotel): solid “no stress” option and a great advantage on being super quiet yet just a few steps from the beach.
  • Fasano Rio de Janeiro: the most iconic Ipanema splurge: if you want the “Ipanema dream” version of Rio, here you'll find it. The sunset view from the famous infinity pool is just amazing.
  • Ipanema Inn: reliable comfort and recommended for its good service + location. Great breakfast and charming design without going full luxury.
  • Hotel Astoria Ipanema (also shown as “Mar Ipanema” on some sites): comfortable pick for visitors who plan to be out most of the day and care more about the practicality of location than room design.
  • More Ipanema (social stay): a hostel with private and shared bedrooms (both mixed and female-only) that offers a lot of activities like caipirinha classes, pubcrawl, yatch party and more.

Good to Know: ideal place for first-timers in Rio, great if you want to be close to the beach and not rely on long Uber rides, but prices are usually higher.

Copacabana: classic, busy, convenient (and overall cheaper)

Copacabana is the most “touristy” beach area, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s packed with places to stay, from high-end luxury hotels to Airbnbs, so you can find good deals if you book smart. This is the choice if you want to stay very close to the beach without paying Leblon or Ipanema's prices.

Our Top Picks in Copacabana

  • Socialtel Copacabana (social stay): this used to be a hostel, now they only offer family and couple rooms (with shared and private bathroom options available), good prices and fun activities.
  • Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana: our favorite upscale option in the neighborhood, often mentioned among Rio’s top hotels. The charming room design, the amazing bathrooms, and the inviting pool are worth the trip.
  • Hilton Rio de Janeiro Copacabana (upper mid-range): great for ocean views and hotel comfort. The rooftop is amazing for enjoying the sunset even if you're not a guest, as we mentioned in the article about fancy drinks in Rio.
  • Emiliano Rio: super comfortable bed and rooms with a minimalist design that let the view shine in its glory. Just gorgeous.
  • Copacabana Palace (splurge, historic): the classic century-old grand hotel on the beachfront. In our humble opinion, it's not a must-stay when talking about luxury, but events like brunch or samba are amazing and you can access them without being a guest (buying tickets).
  • Hostel Aquarela do Leme: a calm, cozy stay with private and shared rooms (mixed and female-only dorms), all with a stunning view and great breakfast included.

Good to Know: it's busier and noisier than Ipanema and Leblon, so we recommend that you search for noise rates on hotel reviews. It’s one of the easiest areas to find last-minute stays because it is the neighborhood with the most hotel/apartments availability. Street smarts matter more here than in quieter areas, so keep your valuables out of sight. Also, if you want to celebrate New Year in Rio, Copacabana is the place to go: the firework’s views from rooftop hotels are amazing.

Leblon: calm, but still very Rio

Leblon is basically Ipanema’s quieter sister. You get the same South Zone convenience and views, but with a more relaxed, residential feel. It’s a great choice if you want beach days without feeling like you’re in the busiest part of town, because even the beach here is less crowded.

Our Top Picks in Leblon

  • Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort: big property, huge pool, and a great option for travelers who care more about comfort and amenities. It works especially well for couples or families who want an easy, relaxing base.
  • JANEIRO Hotel (boutique splurge): one of the most stylish stays in the neighborhood, right on the beach. The ideal place if you want a special stay with design-focused rooms and that full beach vibe.
  • Ritz Plaza Hotel (solid mid-range): a very practical pick in Leblon with a classic hotel feel. Great if you want a well-located base without going fully luxury.
  • Leblon Beach Hostel: a new spot in the city. Very social (it offers a lot of activities together with More Ipanema Hostel), comfortable, beautiful, with mixed and female-only bedrooms available.

Good to Know: prices are sometimes similar to (or higher than) Ipanema. There are fewer hostels here, so Leblon is mostly a hotel or Airbnb neighborhood.

Santa Teresa: charm, luxury, and a slower pace

Santa Teresa is beautiful and green, with hills, old houses, and a more artsy vibe. It feels like a different Rio. It’s a great choice if you want a quieter, more romantic stay and don’t mind taking Ubers everywhere.

Our Top Picks in Santa Teresa

  • Santa Teresa Rio MGallery: the classic boutique hotel choice. Calm, stylish, surrounded by greenery, and very much a special-stay vibe.
  • Vila Santa Teresa: small, exclusive, famous for the views and the sweet-escape feeling.
  • Casa Amarelo: intimate, historic “bourgeoise” mansion from 1904 transformed into a beautiful artsy guesthouse. The french design meets Rio's bossa in a very charming way. Hands down our favorite luxury stay in Rio.
  • JO&JOE (social stay): hostel with shared and private rooms, party energy, great events. It is also in a historic place and just a few steps from Christ the Redeemer's tram entry. They offer mixed or female-only shared rooms. We've stayed here in a private room and really loved the experience as a young couple.

Good to Know: choose Santa Teresa if you want peace and a charming stay that feels removed from the city but actually close to everything. The tradeoff is practicality: you’ll usually rely more on ubering than in other areas (even for short trips).

And if you're coming to Santa Teresa in the summer, a bug repellent is essential. You’ll thank us later.

Flamengo: central, leafy, and super practical

Flamengo is one of the best “logistics bases” in Rio. It’s more local than Ipanema/Copacabana, usually better value, and makes it easy to get to Centro, Lapa, Botafogo, and the beaches without overpaying for a beachfront address, still enjoying a postcard-worthy view of the Sugarloaf mountain from Aterro do Flamengo Park.

Our Top Picks in Flamengo

  • Hotel Regina: classic century-old hotel near the old Palácio do Catete, which used to be seat of government and presidential residence when Rio was the country's capital. Book the “luxo casal” bedroom for the Sugarloaf view.
  • Riale Imperial Flamengo Hotel: solid option in Flamengo with amenities that matter in Rio (like a pool) and a location that’s convenient for getting around.
  • Windsor Florida Hotel: good value for money, close to the subway and well connected to more touristy neighborhoods. We like the breakfast there and the Christ the Redeemer view from the pool at the rooftop.
  • More options: just like Botafogo, Flamengo is also a great area to use if you’re comparing Airbnbs too.

Good to Know: the Aterro do Flamengo Park is the perfect place for running and cycling; it's also closer to the Central Region compared to Ipanema/Copacabana, without being unpredictable on safety like staying in Centro.

Airbnb in Rio: when it’s worth it and where it works best

Airbnb can be amazing in Rio, especially if you want more space, a kitchen, and a calmer routine. But it’s also the option where small details can make or break your stay. It's worth it if you're going with a group (family or friends) or if you need a kitchen for breakfast/budget meals. But if you prefer having a front desk for quick fixes or don’t want to deal with building rules, looking into safety, or WhatsApp check-in instructions, it's best staying at a hotel with 24 hour reception.

Best Neighborhoods for Airbnb

Copacabana: best availability and price range, but you need to filter hard for noise/building quality.

Botafogo: best value + restaurants and nightlife, great if you’re exploring the city beyond the beach.

Flamengo: central, practical, often better value for space, good for sightseeing-heavy trips.

Leblon: calmer, great for couples/families, very apartment-friendly.

Ipanema: easiest “first trip to Rio” base, walkable and beach-focused, but fewer options available (thus more expensive).

Airbnb Filters That Matter in Rio

If you only use a few filters, make them these:

  • “Guest favorite”/high rating and plenty of reviews.
  • Self check-in (or very clear check-in instructions).
  • Air conditioning (don’t assume it exists).
  • Reliable Wi-Fi (if you need it, don’t gamble).
  • Elevator (if you’re not okay with stairs, many buildings are older).
  • Clear location shown before booking (at least approximate).

That's it! No matter where you stay, the goal is the same: pick a neighborhood that matches your rhythm, then choose a place with consistently good reviews and feels safe. That’s how Rio becomes effortless, and way more fun.
